CM&B brought Lidl’s newest 30,000-SF flagship supermarket at 490 Fulton Street to life in the heart of Downtown Brooklyn. This was the sixth Lidl location we’ve delivered, each one pushing boundaries in design, logistics, and execution. For this project, we faced a unique set of urban construction challenges—transforming a historic, multi-story building into a vibrant, modern retail experience.
A Store Like No Other
The layout of this flagship is unconventional: most of the supermarket lives on the second floor in a space that was once home to Raymour & Flanigan, while the first floor—complete with its own entrance—houses the bakery and floral departments. Customers can check out there or hop an escalator straight into the main store above.
Precision and Heritage in Every Detail
Navigating Urban Construction
Transforming a historic, mixed-use building in the heart of Downtown Brooklyn meant juggling a dense urban site, high foot traffic, and complex building conditions. The CM&B team coordinated:
- Multi-floor construction in a former retail and dorm building, including wood framing and challenging floor conditions .
- Permits, inspections, and approvals from multiple authorities, including MTA, DOT, and subway lines
- The entire store spanned over three different addresses, over two levels, each requiring its own permits, inspections, and approvals from multiple authorities, including MTA, DOT, and subway lines
- Glass storefront removal over busy streets and crane work to deliver materials and equipment while preserving existing trees and Citi bike access.
- Creative solutions, like temporarily deactivating Fulton Mall Christmas lights to avoid interference
Urban construction is a puzzle—every piece, from road closures to bus detours, needed precise timing and execution:
- MTA bus detours for 4 routes
- Subway approvals for 2 train lines
- 8 DOT approvals for 6 road closures
- Coordination with environmental teams to protect the streetscape
Through this orchestration, CM&B delivered Lidl’s flagship safely and efficiently.

A Collaboration Built on Shared Values
Community Impact & Partnership
This project is a testament to collaboration—between CM&B, our partners Zyschovich and RAAD, and the Lidl US team. Together, we revitalized a century-old building, preserved its place in the neighborhood’s story, and created a space where residents can gather, shop, and connect.
With six Lidl locations now in the books, CM&B continues to turn complex urban construction challenges into celebrated milestones. Lidl’s Downtown Brooklyn flagship is more than a supermarket—it’s a community anchor.
