Crafting Careers: A New Approach to Construction Talent

At a time when the construction industry faces unprecedented challenges in workforce development, it’s crucial for construction companies to take an active role in shaping the future of our industry. The current labor shortage isn’t just a statistic – it’s a reality that affects project timelines, costs, and the overall ability to meet the growing demands of our built environment.

We recognize that addressing this challenge requires more than acknowledgment; we believe in being part of the solution by actively supporting organizations that introduce young people to careers in the trades and the AEC (Architecture, Engineering, and Construction) industry.

Making a Difference Today for Tomorrow's Workforce

Recently, we hosted two inspiring events YouthBuild Boston and ACE Mentor Rhode Island. These hard hat tours of two active project sites weren’t just casual walk-throughs – they were immersive educational experiences led by our Project Manager Rob McCarter and Superintendents Corey Jackson and Joel Mathews, who shared real-world insights into construction operations.

During these tours, students had the opportunity to witness construction in action, learning about everything from project planning and safety protocols to collaboration required by the various trades to bring architectural plans to life. Our team members shared their personal career journeys, demonstrating there are multiple pathways to success in construction.

Beyond the Hard Hat Tour

As Project Manager Rob McCarter explained, “These site visits represent more than just a few hours of career exploration. They’re part of our larger commitment to addressing the significant labor shortage that directly impacts our industry.” By partnering with organizations like YouthBuild Boston and ACE Mentor Rhode Island, we’re creating a pipeline of talented, inspired individuals who see construction as a viable and exciting career path.

Rob observed the students’ genuine interest, noting that “the enthusiasm and engagement we witnessed from these students reinforces our belief that the next generation is ready and eager to enter the construction industry – they just need the right opportunities and support.”

Empowering Women in Construction

The construction industry has undergone a remarkable transformation in recent years, particularly in creating opportunities for women, with the sector now boasting one of the smallest gender pay gaps across all industries at 99.1% compared to the national average of 81.1%.

We were also encouraged to see a strong representation of women in both YouthBuild Boston and ACE Mentor Rhode Island. Sarah Wood, VP of Human Resources shared “we’ve seen a significant shift in CM&B’s workforce as women increasingly take on leadership positions and become superintendents, Project Managers and Project Executives.” Sarah notes, “This isn’t just about meeting diversity metrics – it’s about building a stronger, more innovative company that benefits from diverse perspectives and leadership styles.”
